About
Steroids are just a name given to the basic compounds that can be found in the human body naturally. Anabolic androgenic steroids are copies of these basic compounds that are used for many different reasons. They were first developed in the 1930s to help treat different types of diseases caused by the male or female sex glands that did not produce enough hormones, such as testosterone or estrogen, for normal growth. In males, the sex glands are the testes. The treatment for males is testosterone; it can come in the form of patch gel or injection. The newly made steroids were also used to treat kidney diseases and certain types of anemia. Due to such strong side effects, doctors then and now prescribe patients with low doses to avoid the risk. These side effects come from the androgenic side of the steroids. After being developed, many athletes and everyday people started to abuse the drug and use it as a way to change their appearance or to increase performance. There is also the Human Growth Hormone, also known as HGH, which has become popular over the past few years. Now, over 100 steroids have been made but only a select few are accepted and approved for use by a physician or veterinarian. What once was and still is a drug used clinically for people with disease has become a quick substitution for eating right and weight training (Hurd).
